A Music Competition in Prague: Inside the Young Bohemia Festival Experience

Recently, one of our groups experienced the Young Bohemia Festival firsthand, and their journey is a perfect example of why Prague continues to be one of the most rewarding destinations for student ensembles.

Arrival in Prague: Music and Magic in the Old Town

From the moment the group arrived, Prague delivered.

It was Easter season, and Old Town Square was alive with festive markets. Cobbled streets were lined with wooden stalls filled with hand-painted eggs, local crafts, and the irresistible scent of traditional Czech chimney cakes. Students wandered through the squares in their free time between performances, soaking in the atmosphere and connecting with the culture.

For directors, this is one of the unique advantages of choosing a music competition in Prague: there are so many opportunities for cultural exploration just steps away from the performance venues.

A Global Stage: The Festival Begins

The opening ceremony set the tone for the entire festival.

A Czech choir took the stage and performed songs from around the world. As each country was represented, students from those nations stood and cheered, filling the hall with energy and pride. Our group from Miami found themselves on their feet more than once, cheering for both the U.S. and Cuba!

It was a nice moment of global connection before the competition got underway.

Performance Moments Students Never Forget

Of course, the heart of any music competition in Prague is performance, and this tour delivered in unforgettable ways.

The group’s concert at St. Nicholas Church in Old Town drew a packed audience. As their music filled the ornate space, curious tourists drifted in from the street, following the sound. For students, it was a powerful realization: their music could stop people in their tracks.

Later, at Prague National Hall, the ensemble took the stage for their adjudicated performance. Their rendition of the E.T. Flying Theme struck a chord with both the audience and judges, earning them a Gold award and a moment of shared triumph they’ll carry for years.

Learning Beyond the Stage

One of the most impactful moments came not from performing, but from listening.

At the Rudolfinum, the group attended a professional concert featuring the premiere of a new work. For many students, it was their first time hearing a world-class orchestra live. Watching professional musicians bring a brand-new piece to life offered a level of inspiration that no rehearsal room can replicate.

Experiences like this are what elevate a music competition in Prague into something much more meaningful than a performance trip.

Building Connections That Last

Between performances, the festival created space for connection.

On a river cruise along the Vltava, students from different countries mingled, shared stories, and took in sweeping views of Prague’s skyline, including the iconic Charles Bridge. Friendships formed quickly, bonded by a shared language of music.

These are the moments students talk about long after the scores are announced.

Why Prague Works So Well for Music Competitions

This tour is a perfect example of why directors continue to choose Prague for international festivals:

  • Iconic venues that elevate student performances
  • Built-in cultural immersion at every turn
  • Meaningful adjudication paired with real audience engagement
  • Global interaction that broadens students’ perspectives
